Personal Lubricants

Personal Lubricants

Personal lubricants are used to reduce friction during sexual acts. Additionally these lubricants are used with sex toys to reduce friction as well as act as a life like feeling during sex toy stimulation.

Originally personal lubricants were used for medical procedures but have come a long way and more available today then ever before. With so many types of lubes on the market, what is the best one for you? We will go over the different types of personal lubricants and what the benefits and disadvantages are for your personal use or with your favorite sex toys.

Water-Based Personal Lubricant

Water-based lubes are just that, water-based. They are the most favored lubricant by the public. The easiest to use, find and clean up. They wash off easily and don’t usually leave any stain on sheets or towels. However there can be an exception to any rule, so colored personal lubricants, all though water based, may cause staining. It is best to try a small amount on an old towel just top be sure. Because they are water-based, these lubes are not ideal for any water sexual acts. And do not work well with any waterproof sex toys you may want to use under water.

The water-based lubricants tent to be much ticker then any silicone lubes. Some people combine the 2 to get just the right consistency they like. However you should know that silicone lubes should not be used with certain types of sex toy materials.

These lubes do become tacky or sticky during use, but can be fixed by adding a little water. Water-based lubricants tent to be less expensive then the silicone based lubricants. You can buy water-based personal lubricants in flavors as well as warming sensations.

When you use water-based lubes with your sex toys, they will last longer. In today’s market with the different types of sex toy materials they have out there, water-based lubricant is always a good choice when you are unsure if your sex toy will be compatible with your favorite lube. See out guide on sex toy materials for further information on this subject.

Sex Toy Materials

In today’s market place of sex toys, there are so many different types of materials to choose from. We get asked all day long, which is the right material for my sex toy? We are going to try and shed a little light on the subject for you. With all the years of experience we have in this industry, maybe we can give you a little guidance. Help stop the confusion of which is the best and right sex toy material for you.

Plastic and Traditional type materials

When the sex toy industry revolution began it was crude to say the least. Plastic style or traditional style vibrators where the common place. Made of a durable plastic material with not much style, these plastic vibrators were made to last. Plastic is easy to care for and clean. You can wash these materials with a good toy cleaner, always making sure that the battery compartment is securely locked in the correct position as to protect it from any damages. A plastic or traditional vibrator is a great choice for external stimulation and can be used on both male and female alike. Which of these sex toys is right for you? Well we suggest you take a look under the “Pick a Sex Toy” section of this information guide. Although some people may find a plain plastic vibrator a bit on the boring side, there are so many new kinds of vibrations and patterns that these sex toys made of plastic sometimes get a bad rap. With all the advancing technology in the sex toy industry it is easy to find a good, high-quality, plastic sex toy with many functions for the experienced and novice sex toy user.

We recommend using a good toy cleaner on these types of products. Most of the toy cleaners today come with a disinfectant agent in them making them a very nice option over soap and water. You can use silicone-based or water-based personal lubricant with plastic material sex toys. The storage of these toys require nothing more then a good cleaning, and removal of the batteries from the battery packs. We suggest storing all sex toys without the batteries in them, as we have heard many a story of someone with a leaking battery. If you don’t pay attention to this, it could cause you many problems. So the best advice on this, store your sex toys without batteries in them.

Jelly or Rubber type materials

As the sex toy industry advanced and with today’s technologies they came up with a nice alternative to the plain old plastic materials that were once the only thing available. The jelly and rubber materials are much softer and more pliable then plastic. They can be used on both male and female alike. Jelly and rubber are porous and for that reason cannot be 100% sterilized. In addition to the fact they cannot be 100% sterilized they also contain phthalates, which have been linked to studies having some serious side effects, so use of condoms with these sex toys is highly recommended. If you share your sex toys with partners (as many people do) you should always use a good condom on that sex toy. Because of the ingredients that they use to make jelly or rubber adult novelties, there are some concerns about the type of materials used. Therefore, people with allergies to latex should NOT use these types of toys. All though some companies today claim their jelly or rubber is “Latex Free “, we still have gotten reports of people with allergies having a problem. We would recommend different type materials for these sex toys users, such as silicone, glass or plastic. To care for this type material we recommend using a good toy cleaner, as most of this on the market today contain a disinfectant solution along with a nice fragrance to remove the rubber smell for this product. If you have a vibrating sex toy made of this material, make sure to completely secure the battery compartment before cleaning to prevent any damage.

An important note, that most people in this industry do not know or tell the consumer about the use of sex toy materials together. Because of the types of ingredients sex toy manufactures use to make these products; there are some types that should never be used together with other sex toys. Jelly and rubber happen to be among that list. You should never store or use any jelly type material sex toys with any Life-Like material sex toys. The reactions to the materials when put together can cause them to literally melt and ruin both sex toys. And for obvious reasons, if this can cause the sex toys to be ruined we don’t think it would be a healthy choice for your body. Do not use a silicone or oil-based personal lubricant with these types of materials, as it will break down material after prolonged uses. We recommend using a water-based personal lubricant with this sex toys.

Silicone materials

The advancement of sex toy technology and material knowledge has lead this industry into the right direction. With the use of silicone in the manufacturing process, toy lines have been designed for the “Latex Allergy” and all so popular “I share my sex toys” crowds. Silicone is a soft and supple material that can be complete sterilized. Because the material is Non Porous you can boil these sex toys in water or even wash them in your dishwasher. However if they have a vibrating mechanism in them for obvious reasons you cannot do this, but you can use a good toy cleaner with disinfectant in it. Silicone sex toys can be more expensive in some cases but we fell they are well worth it.

Silicone masturbator sleeves and cockrings are very popular for the men. This material stretches nicely and are easy to use, while at the same time fitting like a glove. The material is easy to use and easy to clean.

There are some silicone toys on the market today that are NOT 100% silicone and you should be aware of this. When the toy is not 100% silicone is does have some of the other components in it that they use to make Jelly and Rubber type material sex toys. Thereby causing people with allergies to have a reaction when they thought they had picked out a safe solution to their problem. Clearly the leader in the silicone race is Tantus and Fun Factory Sex Toy Lines. They do make their sex toys 100% silicone as well as Fun Factory the other leader in this industry. So make an informed decision when purchasing a silicone sex toy.

An important note, that most people in the industry do not know or tell the consumer is that you should never use a silicone-based lubricant with a silicone sex toy. The use of these two types of silicone together will cause the life of the sex toy to be cut into 1/3 the use. As will you should never use an oil-based lubricant on with this type of material. A good water-based personal lubricant is what should be used. The sooner you clean this item after use, the longer it will last.

Cyberskin, Futurotic, Real Skin, UR3, Life-Like materials

These materials in sex toys really are life-like. Honestly you can’t tell the difference. They are a lovely addition to and sex toy collection. However there is certain information that you should have when purchasing these types of material sex toys. This material is porous and cannot be disinfected, so you should always use a condom with them. The life-like material is stretchy and can accommodate most sizes, and it snugs to the skin nicely. Even though these are the most life-like materials on the market today, there are certain things that can happen to these sex toys if not cared for properly. They are higher in cost so care is especially important. After you have washed your Life-Like material sex toy you will want to make sure it is dried completely, after it has dried you want to apply some cornstarch to the product to prevent it from becoming tacky or sticky. You want to store these items in their own packaging away from any other sex toys you may own.

An important note, that most people in the industry do no know or tell the consumer is that you should never use this toy with any jelly, rubber or like material sex toys. The two types of material can literally melt together and cause a complete mess of the sex toys you have purchased. You should not use a silicone or oil-based personal lubricant with these materials, as they will make the life span of the toy about 1/3 the usage. A good water-based personal lubricant is what we recommend and a good toy cleaner with a disinfectant in it. Never use baby powder on this product as the talc has been linked with some health risks.

Silicone / Rubber materials

Everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon of silicone sex toys, with that being said it is very important to know the difference between them. 100% pure silicone is completely different from a silicone vibrator from say Cal Exotics. All though they claim it is silicone, it is NOT 100% silicone and should be treated the same as any other jelly / rubber type material. These are still very nice sex toys that feel very nice, but should NOT be used by people with allergies. And should NOT be mistaken as 100% silicone.

good water-based lubricant and a good toy cleaner is recommended with this type of material. You should store these sex toys away from any Life-Like material sex toys you may have.

Glass material

Yet again we have another new form of material to experience with our sexual adventures. Glass is a wonderful addition to any sex toy collection. Glass has the ability to be sterilized, is hypo allergenic, and holds its temperature very well. You can clean your glass sex toys in the dishwasher.

An important note, some people in this industry don’t understand or have the knowledge to talk about glass sex toys and recommend boiling or microwaving and using them. This is total false and we highly recommend NOT trying this. Trying this has seriously burned many people. You can warm your glass sex toy by placing it in a bowl of warm water. You can cool your glass sex toys by placing them in the fridge. But NEVER put them in the microwave, as some would suggest. Because they are glass you can use any type of personal lubricant on these sex toys you want. These are an ideal choice for anyone with serious allergies. They are available in many different textures and styles for unlimited amounts of fun.
